Facebook is a Terrible Place to Advertise

Looks like the stellar reach of Facebook provides yet another example of how earned media outpaces paid media in the real world.

According to Adweek, advertisers will spend $2.1 billion on Facebook ads this year, yet the click through rate on the average ad is an asbysmal 0.051 percent.  And this is down from the previsously asbysmal 0.063 percent from 2009.

However, Smart Brief on Social Media says that “Amazon is reporting that its referral traffic from Facebook increased by more than 300% between October 2009 and October 2010. That suggests that marketers are having more success with earned media than paid ads.”
