When Your Lifestyle Collides with Your Message

Famous director James Cameron has a passion for promoting environmental causes.

Unfortunately, his personal lifestyle directly clashes with those messages which allows detractors to negate and dilute them. 

That’s not to say that reality and perception are tied together in any way when it gets political.  Al Gore has maintained his position as an environmental steward despite the excesses of his personal lifetyle — just like Cameron.  Conversely, President George W. Bush rarely gets any traction in the environmental positioning department despite the fact that his personal residence is extremely green.

Yet, despite the political defense and attacks along party lines, the general public gets the inauthenticity of your message when you don’t live up to the same standards as you preach. That goes for executives buying luxury cars and going on luxury vacations during belt-tightening efforts for employees.

The bottom line is to make sure you walk your talk.
